A chemical peel, is to use a chemical solution to improve the smoothness and texture of the facial & body skin by removing its damaged outer layers {i.e. dead skin}. People use chemical peels to treat facial blemishes, acne, wrinkles, tattoo removal, keratosis pilaris, rough hands & feet, melasma, and uneven skin tone. Chemical peels have been around for centuries. Cleopatra and the ancient Romans used various food acids to peel their skin. Lactic acid, an active ingredient of sour milk, was used by Queen Cleopatra as part of an ancient skin rejuvenation regimen. It is said that Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, bathed in asses milk to preserve the beauty and youth of her skin {in addition to sleeping in a gold face masque}. Old wine was used for the same purpose, tartaric acid being the active ingredient.
